Coat of Love

1 Corinthians 13:4-7New Living Translation (NLT)

4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

How many times have you read this passage in the Holy Bible? How many times have you heard this portion in marriage ceremonies? I have heard it, and read it hundreds of times. It is one part of 1 Corinthians 13 that I really like. It helps me remember how I should be toward others. Do you love like this? Do you love like God does?

This is how I check myself to remember how I am supposed to love.  I replace love with my name:

Carlene is patient. Carlene is kind. Carlene is not jealous. Carlene is not boastful. Carlene is not proud. Carlene is not rude. Carlene does not demand her own way. Carlene is not irritable. Carlene keeps no records of wrongs. Carlene does not rejoice about injustice. Carlene rejoices whenever truth wins out. Carlene never gives up. Carlene never loses faith. Carlene is always hopeful. Carlene endures through every circumstance.

There is so much division in our world. I can’t fix the world, but I can fix how I choose to look at the world. I can see all the people who are hurting, even in my own little circle of friends,  and I can choose to be loving and compassionate. I have learned over the years that the only thing jealousy does for a person is to live outside of the will of God. He is all we need. Jesus doesn’t mind if you have pride in yourself and your abilities, but He wants you to remember that being boastful and prideful is a sin and not a loving trait.

When we are rude to others and demand that we get our own way, once again we are not acting in the loving manner that we possess as a child of God. What right do we have as Christians to not be as forgiving of others as Jesus is to us? If the God of the Universe can show us grace when we do not deserve it, how much more should we be willing to extend that grace to others?

The enemy of our souls would love nothing better than for us to hold grudges and stir up discontent where ever we go. He wants us to give up and sink into despair about how bad we have it. That is not truth.

Truth always wins out over evil. Always. Having faith and hope go hand in hand. We may not be able to see the outcome, but we are to trust in the One who has gone before us and has overcome the world.

I can say from personal experience, choosing to live a life of love and put on love as I crawl out of bed for the day, has shaped my life in better ways than if I try to live without it. There will be days that putting on the coat of love will not be easy. But I can say it will be worth it!

Blessings to all! Much love~Carlene
